July Owlcrate Unboxing

Frontofbox

It’s time for another Owlcrate unboxing! This month’s theme was “Strange & Unusual” which is right up my alley. I love creepy, strange, weird, unusual things, especially books. If you are unfamiliar with Owlcrate, it is a subscription service that offers a monthly box of Young Adult/Teen bookish items and also a new release book. Each box gets better, in my opinion. There were a couple of things in this box that have a daily use for me, which isn’t always the case. Most everything they put in the boxes is exclusive and can’t be found anywhere else. The cost of the box for me is $37.98 including shipping, which is a little pricey, but I think what they put in the box is worth much more, and since I’m a busy working mom,  I don’t buy much for myself anymore, so this is a treat I give myself once a month.

Spoiler Card

The first item you see in an Owlcrate box is the spoiler card. Called “spoiler” because it lists everything that is in the box. They have a great design this month. Of course I recognize Edgar Allan Poe, who is the father of creepy fiction, but I’m not sure who the other people are. I’m fairly certain that might be Mary Shelley on the left, but I could be wrong. If anyone knows who the other people are, please tell me in the comment section!

Skull button

Every Owlcrate box comes with a button related to the theme. This button just screams Poe. How much more creepy can you get than a skull and candles?

Skullpushpins

More skulls! These look more like the Dia de los Muertos candy skulls. They are actually push pins, which were created by Team Owlcrate. They never fail to put incredibly unique items into every box.

wallet

This is probably my favorite item from the box. It’s a Raven Boys themed wallet, designed by Reverie and Ink. Please stop by their shop when you get a chance. They have tons of cool bookish items.

strangerthingseleven

Even though this isn’t strictly book related, it’s still fits within the theme for the month. You can’t get much stranger than Eleven from “Stranger Things”. From the other unboxings I’ve seen from this month, the other character sent out was Dustin. Even though I would love to put Eleven on my keychain, for now I’ll just keep her safe within her box.

WhalePrint

All of the prints Owlcrate has sent are so frame-worthy. I have so many of them now, I could devote a whole wall of my house to Owlcrate prints! This print is definitely unusual, but not strange or creepy. It was created by artist Aun-Juli Riddle, exclusively for Owlcrate subscribers! To see her other whimsical watercolor creations, visit her shop on Etsy.

staypeculiarpennant

Can you guess where this quote came from? If you even remotely into the strange and unusual, then you have probably read Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs. They are a series of books that follow of group of unique children who have some very special powers. I have read the first two books, but haven’t gotten around to continuing the series. I believe the 4th book in the series was just recently published. This pennant flag was designed by the talented Risa Rodil. You can find all kins of unique items in her shop on Etsy.

lunalovegoodsticker

Everyone’s favorite Ravenclaw, Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter! This is a gorgeous sticker created by TJ Lubrano. Based out of the Netherlands, she has a ton of awesome fandom stickers in her shop on Etsy.

mints

You can’t have creepy without an Ouija board! This is a tin of mints from Boston America Corp., similar to Altoids. The actual mints are in the shape of the triangle that you move around the board. This is the other item that I get a daily use out of, not for contacting the dead, but for making sure I have fresh breath!!

myplainjane

And, last but not least, is the book for this month, My Plain Jane by Brodi Ashton, Cynthia Hand, and Jodi Meadows. It is a re-telling of Jane Eyre with a creepy spin.

If you received this Owlcrate box, let me know your thoughts on in the comment section. If you would like to subscribe to Owlcrate, please use my referral link and we can both save some money!
